In today’s episode, we go building with Rhino Hero from HABA! This is a great stacking/building game for all ages. You never know, you might find yourself humming along with the Rhino Hero theme song created by the one and only, Matt, from Homeschool Together!

Rhino Hero, designed by Steven Strumpf and Scott Frisco, is a card-based dexterity game where players build a skyscraper together by playing cards that form teach platform level. At the beginning of the game, players are dealt five cards (or seven for a two-player game). On each turn, players will add walls to the tower based on the pattern indicated on the top card of the tower. Once they have placed the walls they will then add a card from their hand to serve as the roof (and next level) of the building. There are some special cards in the game that allow extra ceiling cards to be played, change the direction of play, force other players to draw additional cards, or skip players. There are also cards with the Rhino Hero symbol which means the next player will need to place the small wooden rhino in addition to the walls. Due to the weight of this component, it must be placed carefully. The first player to run out of roof cards wins. Conversely, the first player to knock down the tower loses and the winner is the player holding the fewest remaining cards. In the (highly unlikely) event that all walls have been built, everyone wins together!
While there are many dexterity games on the market, we appreciate that Rhino Hero uses cards to add strategic elements to play. It’s not just about who has the steadiest hands. It’s also quite compact as the building components are flat and bent cards making this a great on-the-go game.
We had a lot of fun playing this game with our 5-year-old. Rhino Hero is the perfect introduction to dexterity games for kids and has a great light strategy element. We hope your family enjoys it as much as we do!
